The Latino Victory Fund, which cultivates public candidates and civic leaders in order to increase civic engagement in Latino communities nationwide, this week announced that it would endorse California Senate President pro Tempore emeritus Kevin de León for U.S. Senate.
“Senator de León fought for the Latino community when Proposition 187 plagued California in 1994, and today he is one of our fiercest defenders against President Trump’s racist policies,” said Cristóbal J. Alex, Latino Victory Fund president. “Senator de Léon is a dedicated advocate who has served his community with distinction by advancing progressive policies that have strengthened the state of California. He’s a seasoned legislator with the gumption to stand up to the Trump administration’s attacks against the Latino community in any Senate floor, whether in Sacramento or Washington, D.C. Latino Victory is proud to stand with Senator de Léon in his bid to make history as California’s first Latino United States senator.”
The Latino Victory Fund is a progressive political action committee with the mission of growing Latino political power by increasing Latino representation at every level of government – from the school board to the Senate to the White House. Latino Victory identifies, recruits, and develops candidates for public office while building a permanent base of donors to support them. LVF currently has state chapters in Georgia, Nevada and Arizona to recruit and uplift the emerging bench of leaders.
“From just and humane immigration reforms to a 100% clean-energy future, Latino participation in our political process is critical as we look to address our most pressing national issues,” said Senator Kevin de Léon. “In my lifetime, we have made great strides toward civic inclusion, strides due in no small part to the Latino Victory Fund’s determined efforts to engage Latino voters and donors by developing leaders who share our stories and our values. I am proud to work with the Latino Victory Fund toward this important goal, and am honored to have earned their endorsement.”
The author and staunchest defender of the California Values Act, Senator de León has championed progressive policies in California to improve the lives of its hard-working families. Following President Trump’s contravention of DACA, Senator de León proved instrumental in negotiating $30 million to assist the nearly 250,000 Dreamers in California with legal services as well as “safety net” funding to help DACA students continue their education if Trump’s policies prevented them from working. In 2014, he became the first Latino to lead the California Senate in 130 years. If elected in November, Sen. de León would be the first Latino to represent California in the U.S. Senate.
